Part V Summary
In chapter thirty-six, Dave Bowman returns to Jupiter, aware that he is being watched and used, but those responsible have not yet revealed themselves. He travels to Callisto, then to Ganymede. From there he goes to Europa. He sees the wreckage of Tsien, then goes under the ice. Deep under Europa's surface, ice gives way to warm water, and life is present there. He wanders in Europa's ocean and finds many areas where drastic changes have wiped out ecosystems. He examines all sorts of life inside Europa's mass, and understands that this life will all die out some day, because the forces that provide Europa with energy will also die out some day.
