Part 5, Chapters 30-35 Summary
In chapter thirty, the being once known as David Bowman has experienced an incredible transformation brought about by the monolith, and now he races toward Earth. He detects a nuclear weapon in orbit around the planet and rapidly disables it, taking its energy into himself. This action causes mass confusion on Earth. After this, Bowmen plunges toward Earth, to the place where he grew up.
In chapter thirty-one, Florida's EPCOT center has become a village for senior citizens, having reached about twenty-thousand in population. Jessi, Dave Bowman's mother, is visited by a robot food trolley and a nurse. Frustrated with the nurse, Jessi swipes her cane, trying to strike her legs, but the nurse turns out only to be a hologram. This is all caught on a video played by a medical technician, who decides to warn the staff...
