Summary
In Chapter 11, even though he tried to ignore Carolyn Poulin, Jake eventually gave into his feeling that he needed to keep her from getting shot and paralyzed. He took a different approach by bribing Cullum to stay in on the Saturday the freak accident would have taken place. He offered the man two hundred dollars to teach him how to play cribbage instead of going hunting. Although Cullum’s wife was at first wary of Jake and his offer, she approached him after the cribbage lesson was finished and thanked him. She had the sense that Jake had been sent by God to save her husband from some calamity.
