Summary
In Part Two, "The Body," "The Morgue," Leila's body arrives at the morgue. The medical examiner inspects her wounds. Murder in Istanbul is not uncommon. In his report he says she was beaten and strangled. Because her family is disinterested in her death, he tells the orderly, Kameel Effendi, to arrange for her body to be buried in The Cemetery of the Companionless. Kameel bets the examiner to release her body to her waiting friends outside the gate. The examiner forbids it.
In "The Five," Leila's friends wait outside the hospital. Nalan is reluctant to give up recovering Leila's body. Eventually Kameel approaches. He tells them he never got to bury his wife, and understands their grief. He gives them the location of Leila's grave. Nalan feels overcome by sadness. Mourning Leila, she is determined to give her a proper funeral...
