Schulberg works and reworks his subject matter. What Makes Sammy Run?
started as a short story, was adapted into a novel, made into a play and produced as a television drama. Even before the film On The Waterfront had been released, Schulberg was turning it into a novel. His short story "Your Arkansas Traveler" from the collection Some Faces in the Crowd became the award-winning film A Face in the Crowd. The Disenchanted began as a novel, was highly successful, and then was made into a play which ran a long time on Broadway with Jason Robards as Manley Halliday. For the play, Schulberg collaborated with Harvey Breit. Writers in America, which appeared in 1983, is a republication of Schulberg's Four Seasons of Success (1979).
