This article reproduces an address Klein gave in 1986 to a conference sponsored by the American Association of School Librarians. In it, she discusses her own works in connection with two meanings of her topic, helping children deal with the difficult times we are all living in and helping them deal with their own individual problems.

She talks about her own reading as a teen-ager, her adult reading, and some of her main goals in her fiction for young adults.
