The Pathfinder is comprised of two clearly defined parts, each developing an adventure in which Mabel is endangered, Hawkeye and Chingachgook come to the rescue, and James Western proves his bravery and skill. But both sections also develop the theme of Natty's growing interest in the girl and his resulting distraction and failures which are a result of letting considerations of infatuation and love override his habitual caution.
