Angeli directed most of her books toward very young audiences; her few writings appropriate for young adult readers are her longer works of historical fiction: Jared's Island, The Door in the Wall and Black Fox of Lorne. Jared's Island is a lengthy, somewhat improbable tale involving a young Scottish boy whose ship capsizes off the North American coast. He is rescued by a Quaker, with whom he stays for a time before going to live with a tribe of Native Americans. The novel takes place in the eighteenth century, just before the Revolutionary War. Like many of Angeli's earlier writings, it presents carefully researched descriptions of life among America's early settlers and inhabitants.
