The story of A Young Patriot is primarily that of Joseph Plumb Martin: Joseph was unfailingly cheerful and outgoing, the sort of person who made friends easily and who liked to talk, a habit that sometimes got him (like his father) into hot water with those in charge. His adventurous spirit often led him into dangerous situations, but it never seems to have dulled his curiosity or fascination with the world around him. And while his words were often laced with humor and sarcasm, he had a thoughtful, caring side as well. On several occasions during battles he placed himself at serious risk in order to help wounded fellow soldiers.
"Unfailingly cheerful" is an exaggeration; Joseph was as miserable as anyone when cold, without enough clothing, and hungry.
