Rosalind Silver is a freelance writer and the former editor of Media & Values magazine, in which this article originally appeared. In it she discusses the enduring problem of media violence. To deal with the issue, she writes, the public must reject the simplistic arguments that are commonly used to defend violent entertainment. She contends that media violence is more graphic than it has been in the past; that society should aid parents in limiting their children's exposure to media violence; that the TV industry intentionally uses violent programs to attract viewers; and that movie and television producers have a responsibility to reduce the amount of violence in popular entertainment. These are necessary steps, Silver concludes, toward creating a less violent culture.
