The investigation of UFOs currently falls outside the realm of mainstream science. This is unfortunate because the mysterious phenomenon of UFO sightings is worthy of serious scientific research. Stumbling blocks for many scientists who would otherwise be interested in UFOs include the lack of consensus, low scientific reputation, and questionable theories found within the field of ufology. To win public support and funding for UFO research, ufologists should follow the example of the astronomical community and develop research programs and agendas of unimpeachable professionalism and scientific rigor.
