In its 1998 annual report, the World Bank maintains that its programs, including loans, reduce poverty and improve living standards in developing countries. The World Bank contends that partnerships with governmental and nongovernmental organizations will further increase its effectiveness. The World Bank is an institution owned by more than 180 member countries whose views are represented by a Board of Governors and Board of Directors. The organization raises money through contributions from member governments and the world’s capital markets and uses those funds to aid over one hundred developing nations as of June 1999.
