In the following viewpoint Bonnie J.K. Richardson maintains that the U.S. government must work with the entertainment and computer industries to ensure that intellectual property is not threatened by copyright theft. She argues that some trade-based legislation and treaties have helped enforce intellectual property laws. However, Richardson contends that rules formulated by the countries (including the United States) participating in the Hague Convention may not be as beneficial for the copyright industries because American companies might find themselves under the jurisdiction of nations whose laws are contrary to those of the United States. Richardson is the vice-president of trade and federal affairs for the Motion Picture Association of America. This viewpoint was originally given as testimony before the House Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
