OVER THE YEARS Americans have taken many approaches to the problem of teen prostitution. Today, law enforcement officials and social welfare agencies are working to develop programs that provide troubled young people with the services and support they will need to break away from prostitution, which endangers both their bodies and their spirits. As Joan Johnson points out, "The best programs do not work in isolation. They are often a joint effort of social service work, the police, the courts, the schools, religious organizations and business."80 The first step is to find a place where street teens can be safe from pimps. Teen prostitutes need to be protected from the adults who exploit them sexually and abuse them physically to prevent them from leaving "the life."
