Job Corps is a national job training program created in 1964 to give young men and women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four a fresh start. It is a residential program with centers in forty-four states and the District of Columbia. It provides the skills students need to get good jobs in a wide variety of occupations and also offers students the opportunity to earn a GED certificate. Students receive a living allowance, and when they complete the program, they are given a readjustment allowance (based on the amount of time they spent at Job Corps) to help them when they leave the program.
