In the following viewpoint, Elizabeth Arens argues that enforcement of Title IX, which requires that men and women have equal opportunity to participate in intercollegiate sports, hinders men’s athletic opportunities. Arens believes that more men than women are interested in taking part in college sports and that universities fail to take this into account when applying Title IX. Instead, Arens contends, universities enforce Title IX by cutting the number of men’s teams in order to achieve a balance between the number of male and female athletes. As of 1998, Arens was a student at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, and a member of the women’s varsity squash team.
