Jeremiah Creedon
Although many Americans say they believe in God, they have drastically different conceptions about who or what God is, argues Jeremiah Creedon in the following viewpoint. He asserts that a growing number of Americans are rejecting traditional organized religions such as Christianity and are combining different religions and creating their own belief systems to meet their spiritual needs. As a result, the Untied States is in a state of transition from a predominantly Christian nation to one that is religiously diverse. Although some people have criticized Americans for taking a “cafeteria” approach to religion, Creedon suggests that the increasing amount of religious experimentation and creativity is a positive development. Creedon is a senior editor of the Utne Reader, an alternative press publication.
