The Great Bear rain forest, an 8-million-acre expanse along the north-central coast of British Columbia, is the largest intact temperate rain forest in the world. This Canadian rain forest is the only place in the world to find the white Kermode bear, or spirit bear. It is estimated that 230 bird species and 68 different mammals reside there as well. However, like other rain forests, the Great Bear rain forest has been threatened by excessive logging and destruction. The logging industry threatens not only the wildlife, but also the Heiltsuk, an Indian tribe that lives there.
