Since an armistice in 1953 ended the Korean War, the United States has stationed troops in South Korea and has pledged to come to its defense in the event of North Korean attack. In the following viewpoint, Doug Bandow argues that American foreign policy regarding South Korea should be rethought and American soldiers there withdrawn. Circumstances have changed, he argues, most notably the end of the Cold War between the United States and North Korea’s Communist supporters, the Soviet Union and China. It is time, he believes, for the Republic of (South) Korea to take more responsibility for its own defense.
