The American Medical Association (AMA) is a three hundred thousand-member organization for physicians. In 1847, the AMA established a Code of Medical Ethics, which is continually revised and updated to take account of changing technologies and social values. The AMA's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs is a nine-member panel that interprets the Code of Medical Ethics and sets ethical policies for medical professionals. The AMA also has a separate Institute for Ethics, which is a research center that explores ethical issues facing doctors, patients, and the public.
