Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan
On September 27, 1996, an Islamic militia called the Taliban seized control of the government of Afghanistan. Among the Taliban’s many new decrees were laws that prohibit women from working, obtaining an education, and even receiving medical care. The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan contends that such injustices are the product of Islamic fundamentalism, which views women as subhuman. RAWA is an organization of Afghan women fighting for peace, freedom, democracy, and women’s rights in Afghanistan.
