On January 9, 2003, thirty-one U.S. soldiers were wounded by a bomb blast at the 101 Airborne Division base at Tall'Afar in northern Iraq. The blast was set off by a suspected suicide bomber who drove to the gates of the base. U.S. troops opened fire on the vehicle after it failed to stop at an entry point, and the vehicle then detonated. In a second attack that same day, a suicide bomber approached a gate at Forward Operating Base Thunder in Ba'qubahabout thirty miles northeast of Baghdadpretending to be ill. When troops did not come to his aid, the man detonated himself, wounding two American soldiers.
