The Statesman
The following viewpoint on Kashmir, a state of India that is also claimed by Pakistan, is taken from an editorial in The Statesman, one of India’s oldest English-language newspapers. The editors address what they view as “myths” about Kashmir, among which are that Kashmir is under illegitimate Indian occupation. They argue that India has legitimate title to Kashmir due to the fact that its local ruler decided to join India in 1947, and that it is actually Pakistan that has illegally invaded and occupied parts of Kashmir.
