Garrett Davis
In the 1820s and 1830s the rate of immigration to the United States increased dramatically, with Ireland and Germany replacing Great Britain as the main source of immigrants. Many Americans became concerned about the potential negative effects of this increase in immigration. The following viewpoint is taken from an 1849 speech by Garrett Davis (1801–1872) in which he argues that immigrants endanger America. He contends that the United States should discourage immigration and should restrict immigrants’ right to vote. Davis served as a U.S. senator and congressman for the state of Kentucky.
