In the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Muslims, Middle Easterners, and South Asian immigrants— and those mistaken for these minorities—are facing discrimination and hate crimes, writes David Van Biema in the following viewpoint. Those perceived as Arab or Muslim have encountered physical attacks, ethnic profiling, and racial harassment. Ironically, however, most U.S. Muslims today were born in America and uphold the same values and loyalties that other citizens do.
