World hunger is chronic and it is widespread, a fact of life for millions in developing as well as developed countries.

Media attention focuses on massive efforts directed to famine relief in such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Kurdish Iraq. Yet hunger is not primarily the result of food shortages caused by wars or natural disasters. Indeed, hunger and food surpluses often exist, as in the United States, side by side.
