Best estimates are that millions of children are being raised in homes headed by a lesbian or gay parent. The majority of these children are born into heterosexual marriages that end after a spouse “comes out” as lesbian or gay.
Each time a man or a woman in a heterosexual marriage with children is involved in a divorce in which his or her gay or lesbian sexual orientation is an issue, the potential for a custody battle looms. Each time an already divorced parent “comes out” as lesbian or gay, the threat of a custody modification based on sexual orientation is real.
