In the following viewpoint, the Bureau of Labor Education at the University of Maine argues that America’s low ranking on a 2000 World Health Organization (WHO) survey highlights the problems that plague the American health care system. According to the bureau, while the United States spends the most on health care of any developed country, it ranks far below the others in overall performance and fairness of financial contributions. A single payer plan might give Americans the health care they are already paying for but not getting, the bureau maintains. The bureau is part of the University of Maine’s Division of Lifelong Learning and provides research and education to Maine workers.
