One of Canada's best—known haunted houses is Mackenzie House in Toronto, Ontario. The old brick mansion was the last home of William Lyon Mackenzie, who as a young man of twenty—five emigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1820. Mackenzie published the Colonial Advocate, a political newspaper, and actively campaigned for Canada's liberty from England. At one point, he even led on abortive coup against the government; he was captured, imprisoned for treason, and eventually freed. Mackenzie's final years "were full of bitterness over his failed political ambitions and his financial difficulties," according to Michael Norman and Beth Scott in Haunted America.
