What happens during a modern haunting investigation? Margaret Mittelbach and Michael Crewdson, the authors of the following viewpoint, decided to find out. They made arrangements to participate in an investigation of the reputedly haunted Burlington County Prison in Mount Holly, New Jersey. The investigation was being conducted by South Jersey Ghost Research, a ghost—hunting organization. The ghost hunters avidly used all kinds of technical equipment, hoping to acquire scientific proof that ghosts inhabited the prison, but Mittelbach and Crewdson found that little out of the ordinary seemed to occur. They clearly thought the night's events were a little silly. Mittelbach and Crewdson are the authors of Wild New York: A Guide to the Wildlife, Wild Places, and Natural Phenomena of New York City.
