Ed Warren and his wife, Lorraine, have been investigating ghosts and other entities since the 1940s. They were already well-known as investigators and banishers of ghosts, demons, and poltergeists when they were called in to investigate a house in Amityville, New York, that was said to be haunted by the spirits of a murdered family. The story of that haunting became a famous movie, The Amityville Horror.
Some ghost hunters use various kinds of instruments to detect a ghostly presence. The Warrens, however, rely on psychic communication. They claim that Lorraine is able not only to sense a ghost but to communicate with it and, often, banish it. She does this by encouraging it to "go to the light" that represents the afterlife.
