Mark Sagoff
In the following viewpoint, Mark Sagoff maintains that scientists should be allowed to patent the genes they discover as well as the genetically modified cells and organisms produced in their laboratories. However, he emphasizes his belief that having a patent on a gene or organism should not imply that the scientist “owns,” “invented,” or “created” anything. Instead, patents are designed to encourage research by permitting patent owners to be the only ones legally permitted to profit from their discovery, for a limited period of time.
