The following organizations are concerned with gay rights. Some work to include civil rights for gay men and lesbians in federal, state, and local legislation and others work to curb or to halt the inclusion of gay rights at those levels.

The ACLU is the oldest and largest organization in the United States working to protect and maintain civil rights. It handles legal cases, provides educational materials, and helps to make public policy on behalf of gay men and lesbians. Its handbook The Rights of Lesbians and Gay Men:
