Henry Morgentaler

About the author: Henry Morgentaler is the founding president of the Humanist Association of Canada and the author of Abortion and Contraception. He has opened abortion clinics across Canada, often in the face of strong opposition.

Contrary to what pro-life activists and even some defenders of legal abortion believe, abortion is an extremely moral choice that benefits women and society. Access to legal abortion upholds women's right to control their destinies and allows children to be born into homes where they will be loved and cared for. Most important, abortion reduces the number of unwanted children— some of whom become criminals as a result of parental abuse or neglect. Reproductive choice is clearly an important aspect of a society committed to the ideals of peace, justice, and freedom.
