Protecting endangered species is both a scientific and a political challenge. Scientists differ on how many species are heading for extinction, and therefore whether the world faces a crisis of extinction. Only research will ultimately answer the question. At the same time, actions taken to preserve plants and animals can affect the lives of many people, especially in rural areas,where endangered species are most likely to be found.
