K.J. Wilson A restraining order, also known as a civil protection order, is a legal document issued by a judge that, in a domestic violence case, enjoins the abuser to stay away from his or her victim. In the following viewpoint, K.J. Wilson discusses the family court system and protection orders. Unfortunately, Wilson admits, civil protection orders are sometimes difficult to obtain and enforce. She adds, however, that obtaining a protection order gives many women a sense of empowerment and does prevent some women from being harassed by their abusers.
