It has many causes, including opposition to the death penalty, protection from government surveillance, and making sure that personal information remains private and is not used against individuals by the government.

Created in 1992 by Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, this nonprofit legal clinic handles cases in which postconviction DNA testing can yield conclusive proof of innocence. There are many other Innocence Projects around the country, including the California Innocence Project based at the California Western School of Law.
