Founded in 1920, the ACLU champions the rights set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The union is one of America's oldest civil liberties organizations. Staunch opponents of the death penalty, ACLU members defend death row inmates and attempt to postpone executions. The ACLU publishes the quarterly newspaper Civil Liberties and various pamphlets, books, and position papers.
