Allan C. Brownfeld
In the following viewpoint, Allan C. Brownfeld argues that the astronomical drop in New York City’s crime rate can be traced to the police’s “zero tolerance” policy for relatively minor infractions such as jumping turnstiles at subway stations and public drinking, and to having police walk a beat instead of responding to calls in cars. Some people who were arrested on such minor charges were found to be armed, and Brownfeld contends that by following through on the zero tolerance policy, the police reduced the likelihood that these offenders would commit more serious crimes in the future.
