One of the most well known substance abuse treatment programs is the one developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. In the following viewpoint, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous contends that the organization, whose program does not permit even limited consumption of alcohol, helped save her life. According to the author, treatments such as controlled- drinking programs, psychiatry, and biofeedback failed to reduce her compulsion to drink. She asserts that although she was initially reluctant to become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, she is glad she kept an open mind because the meetings and literature have helped her control her drinking problem.
