RULES AND LAWS can scratch only the surface of bigotry in the United States today, so many people have taken up other methods to chip away at prejudice and try to build a more tolerant society. Individuals, as well as schools, communities, businesses, and organizations, fight bigotry through education, information, counseling, and social opportunities. Success in these efforts is rarely seen overnight. Indeed, success is sometimes not seen at all. This is not surprising, given the deep roots of prejudice and continuing conditions that feed into stereotypes and bigotry.
