Both government and scientists increasingly urge the development and use of alternatives to gasoline. In the following viewpoint, Shawna Tracy and Roberta Stauffer provide evidence of America’s improved technologies and increased use of alternative fuels, including natural gas, propane, and hydrogen. Tracy and Stauffer maintain that although these fuels are vital to America’s future, no one option will satisfy our transportation needs, nor will gasoline be completely replaced in the short- term future. Tracy and Stauffer are former information specialist and technical writer, respectively, for the U.S. Department of Energy–sponsored National Center for Appropriate Technologies in Butte, Montana.
