Authors often use generalizations-explicit or implied, which may be either true or false-in the hope that their readers will make their own generalizations. For example, Shermer offers his personal experience of hallucinating an alien abduction. He wants his readers to generalize that most people's claims of alien abduction are like his- caused by an altered state of consciousness due to stress, a lack of sleep, or some other factor.
