In the following viewpoint Heather Ogilvie argues that what is called alcoholism is often the result of behavior that the alcoholic can change. In such cases, she asserts, the optimum solution might not be total abstinence but moderate drinking. Further, she contends that alcoholics are better served by being told that they can regain control of their lives by making choices in their own treatment rather than by being told that they have an uncontrollable disease.
