1887-1945

African-American physician who gained recognition in the field of otolaryngology, or study of ear and throat. Born to poor parents, Barnes did so well on an entrance exam to the University of Pennsylvania that he won a scholarship. He received his M.D. degree in 1912 and after his residency, went to France in 1924 for additional study. In 1927 he was the first African-American to become a Diplomat of the Medical Board of Otolaryngology. Barnes was an active social leader in Philadelphia and published over 23 scientific studies.
