British scientist and theologist who in 1840 wrote, "We need very much a name to describe a cultivator of science in general. I should incline to call him a scientist." This statement would later be recognized as the first written use of the term "scientist." Moreover, with a three-volume book entitled History of the Inductive Sciences, Whewell is best remembered as one of the first scholars to make a systematic treatise on the history and philosophy of science.
