Welsh mathematician and historian. Although his own contributions to the science of mathematics was minimal, his correspondence with most of the famous mathematicians of his era survived and provided valuable information to future students. He served England by teaching mathematics aboard ships for seven years, then teaching in London, where he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1711. When he died in London in 1749, his estate included an imposing collection of letters and manuscripts that were apparently intended for future publication.
