English physician who published a classic description of angina pectoris entitled "Some Account of the Disorder of the Breast" in 1772. Heberden was the first to use the term "angina pectoris" and to provide a complete and accurate description of the symptoms associated with this cardiovascular disease. The condition is now known to be caused by coronary artery occlusion. He was the founder and editor of Medical Transactions and one of the first physicians to distinguish carefully between chicken pox and smallpox. Heberden's nodes are named for him.
