Scottish physician and educator, the preeminent medical teacher of the eighteenth century. He co-founded the Glasgow Medical School in 1744 and thereafter taught at both Glasgow and Edinburgh. In 1769 he published Synopsis Nosologiae Methodicae, an elaborate classification of all known diseases, modeled on the work of Carolus Linnaeus and François Boissier de la Croix de Sauvages. Cullen's First Lines of the Practice of Physic (1777) and A Treatise of the Materia Medica (1789) each went into many editions and remained standard textbooks long after his death.
