Russian explorer whose journeys of exploration included travels to Iceland, Tunis, Egypt, and the Sudan. Junker conducted most of his explorations in north and central Africa, where he explored the lower Sobat River and portions of the White Nile and its tributaries. Junker also made numerous important ethnographic observations in central Africa. At one point, prevented by an uprising from crossing Sudan, he returned to Europe by traversing Africa to the east through what is now Tanzania.
